Answers
1. What happens at camp?
At camp you'll get to have lots of fun doing stuff like skiing, drumming, swimming, going on waterslides, playing games and just hanging out. Camps are a great chance to meet other young people who also care for a family member with an illness or disability. You'll be able to make new friends and have a bit of time away from your caring role. There'll be time to talk about what it's like to be a young carer and to think about what support you may need or want. Young carers often say that they come away from camp feeling more relaxed and better able to deal with stuff that comes up in life.
2. How long do camps last?
The camps may be 3 days or 5 days long. Campers stay overnight in cabins (there is a trained leader attached to each cabin)
3. Who can come to camp?
If you are a young carer (that is you care for a family member who has a disability, mental illness, drug/alcohol dependence or other illness) and live in NSW then you can apply to come to camp. Each camp is open to young carers of different ages (Camp Djanaba 8 -12 yr olds, Camp Muru 13-17 yr olds, Gamarada Retreat 18-25 yr olds).
4. How do I apply for camp?
If you are part of the Young Carer Club we will send you an application form with our newsletter.
5. How do I know if I have been accepted to camp?
If your application is accepted then you will get a letter in the mail with travel details, camper guidelines and a 'what to bring' list. If the camp is full we will put you on a waiting list in case someone drops out and will send you a waiting list letter with camp information in case you are invited to attend.
6. How much do camps cost?
Camps are free of cost, unless you want to make a donation. However, you may need to pay a small amount for some of your travel costs.
