Volunteer Opportunity - Camp Leader

We run state-wide camps for young carers aged (8-12, 13-17 and 18-25 years). Camp is an opportunity for these Young Carers to take a break, unwind, have fun and meet new friends in the same situation.

Our camp program includes heaps of outdoor activities, games, youth theatre and interactive small groups where young carers get to talk about their family and caring role.

Volunteers are an integral part of the Young Carer camps. Up to 18 leaders per camp give up to 5 days of their time twice yearly to come to camp as volunteer leaders. Some leaders have been to over 15 young carer camps, and some take annual leave from their jobs to attend.

Volunteer Opportunity - Camp Nurse

For each of our statewide camps we need a volunteer with nursing experience to undertake the following responsibilities:

  • Storing and dispensing camper medications
  • Familiarising self with medical background of campers and staff (allergies, diets, medications)
  • Working with leaders to meet the health and well-being needs of campers (eg hydration, sun protection, hygiene, rest)
  • Referring  injuries and ailments to Camp Co-ordinator
  • Knowing location and contents of the first aid kit at all times
  • Having contact details of local medical and dental services on hand
  • And most importantly - participating in all aspects of the camp program including all the fun activities!

Volunteer Experiences

I am humbled and privileged to work with Young Carers.  Seeing how the campers have fun, meet new friends, overcome challenges, learn from each other, laugh, support each other and grow has revitalised me.  Heidi (camp leader)

Throughout the two camps that I completed I found that my personal development and growth was quite incredible...I now know that my future is with working with young people  Jenny (camp leader)

How do you apply to become a volunteer?
Potential camp leaders must fill in an application form as well as a Working with Children Check form, then have a face-to-face interview with an interview panel which include Carers NSW staff and volunteers.  Before being accepted onto camp, all camp leaders must undertake a National Criminal Records Check.  Please note that if you have offences involving violence or sexual offences, you may not be able to volunteer with Carers NSW.   All leaders must attend camp leader training evenings in the run up to camp, and the leader debrief which takes place 1 week after the camp has finished.
